ORAL METHOD&#38;nbsp;is a reading series that invites writers and artists to create new work in response to a theme-based prompt with the intent of reading the resulting texts aloud for the first time in the presence of other readers and listeners.
This project encourages experimental approaches and forms, consideration of the oral and aural elements of text (how it feels to speak! how it feels to listen! writing in anticipation of sharing words IRL and in real time!), and engagement with live reading as an act of community building, vulnerability, testing, revising, performance, and play. Reading events function as contexts where participants can create and share writing that may sit outside of their typical practices. 
ORAL METHOD acknowledges and is inspired by the long and rich histories of oral storytelling practices amongst many diverse cultures. Esmé Hogeveen is a writer and editor based in Tkaronto/Toronto. She organizes&#38;nbsp;ORAL METHOD, an experimental reading series that invites writers and artists to create new work in response to a shared prompt and present it for the first time in the company of other readers and listeners.&#38;nbsp;Her criticism and essays have appeared in outlets including The New York Times, The LA Review of Books, Interview Magazine, Artforum, Bookforum, frieze, BOMB, The Baffler, TANK Magazine, Another Gaze, Hazlitt, Hyperallergic, Texte zur Kunst, S/Magazine, Spike Art Magazine, GARAGE, Canadian Art, C Magazine, Border Crossings, Inuit Art Quarterly,&#38;nbsp; and cléo film journal. Esmé has participated in residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity (Banff, AB), Caldera Arts Center (Sisters, OR), the Khyber Centre for the Arts (Halifax, NS), White Rabbit (Red Clay, NS), the Plug In ICA (Winnipeg, MB), as well as a Research Fellowship at Images Festival (2018) and a Media Mentorship at the Toronto International Film Festival (2019), and she has presented new writing at venues including Pack Animal, Union Gallery, Pumice Raft, Towards Gallery, Who’s Afraid?, and Trampoline Hall. She is a previous member of the MICE (Moving Image Culture, Etc.) Magazine Collective and from 2017-2019, she co-organized Writing Goop, an experimental art writing group, with Emma Sharpe. 
Her academic studies have focused on auto-theory, feminist art histories, and the presence of art in fiction and vice-versa. She holds a MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and studied at Cornell University’s School of Criticism and Theory. More recently, her cross-disciplinary work has led to speaking engagements and writing commissions for various art spaces. 


Esmé takes on copywriting, editing, writing coaching, and content development contracts. Previous clients include the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), SSENSE, and lululemon, among others. She has also developed editorial collaborations with small businesses such as 100% SILK Shop. To inquire about rates and availability, please send an email.
